How to Layer Your Skincare Correctly

Using good skincare products is only half the equation. Applying them in the right order is what determines how well they actually absorb and work for your skin. The wrong sequence can prevent active ingredients from penetrating properly — or worse, reduce their effectiveness entirely.

Here's the correct layering sequence and the reasoning behind each step.

The Golden Rule: Lightest to Heaviest

Skincare should always be layered from the thinnest consistency to the thickest. Lighter products are water-based and absorb quickly into the skin. Heavier products create a seal over them. If you apply a thick cream before a serum, the serum can't penetrate — it just sits on top of the barrier the cream has created.

Step 1: Cleanser

Always start with clean skin. Cleansing removes the day's buildup — excess oil, pollution, dead skin cells, sweat, and any residue from previous products. Without this step, everything you apply afterwards is sitting on top of a layer of grime rather than making contact with your actual skin.

In the morning a gentle rinse or light cleanser is enough. In the evening, double cleansing — an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based one — removes sunscreen and makeup more effectively.

Step 2: Toner

A toner applied to damp skin after cleansing serves two purposes. It rebalances your skin's pH after cleansing, and it adds the first layer of hydration. This preps the skin to absorb whatever comes next more efficiently.

Calming toners containing Centella Asiatica are particularly effective here — they reduce any post-cleanse sensitivity and begin supporting the barrier before the rest of your routine lands.

Step 3: Serum

This is where your targeted actives go. Serums are concentrated formulas designed to address specific skin concerns — Niacinamide for tone and pores, Hyaluronic Acid for deep hydration, Vitamin C for brightening, or Centella for barrier repair and inflammation.

Apply serums while your skin is still slightly damp from toner — this helps them absorb faster and more evenly. Press them in gently with your fingertips rather than rubbing, and give each serum 30 to 60 seconds to absorb before layering the next one.

If you're using multiple serums, apply the most watery one first and work up to thicker textures.

Step 4: Moisturiser

Moisturiser does two things: it adds hydration of its own, and it seals everything beneath it in place. Think of it as a protective layer that slows down moisture loss and holds your serums against the skin long enough to do their work.

In the morning, a lighter moisturiser works well. In the evening, you can use something richer — overnight is when your skin's repair cycle is most active, so a more nourishing cream gives it the support it needs while you sleep.

Step 5: SPF (Morning Only)

SPF is the last step in your morning routine and it is non-negotiable — especially in South Africa, where the UV index regularly reaches 10 and above. UVA rays cause pigmentation and premature ageing. UVB rays cause burning. Both cause long-term skin damage, and both are present even on cloudy days.

Apply SPF 30 minimum as the very last step, after moisturiser has had a moment to absorb. Don't mix it into your moisturiser — it needs to sit as an even layer on the skin's surface to work properly.

Evening Routine Difference

At night, skip the SPF and replace your daytime moisturiser with a richer night cream or targeted treatment. This is the best time to use ingredients like Collagen creams or barrier-repair formulas, since your skin is in active repair mode while you sleep and will make the most of nourishing ingredients.

Why Layering Order Matters

Getting the order right doesn't require a complicated routine. Even a simple three-step routine — cleanser, serum, moisturiser, SPF — done consistently in the right order will outperform a ten-step routine applied in the wrong sequence every time.

The principle is simple: prepare the skin, treat it, protect it. Everything else is built around that.
